he hotel had a decent breakfast, and we set off not too late today, about 9:30 or so. We had a relatively short ride today along old 61, going through the towns of Renova, Merigold, Mound Bayou, Winstonville, Shelby, Duncan, and Alligator before getting to lunch (and our stop for the day) at Clarksdale. We ate at a great old greasy spoon called Rest Haven. We toyed with the idea of getting rooms in Morgan Freeman’s place, but the price and the thought of live music below us til 2am dissuaded us. We opted to go for the motel that was right across the street, figuring we could then easily come back to Rest Haven for breakfast the next day. We got a room, cleaned up and napped, then called Jolly Taxi for a ride to dinner. If you are ever in Clarksdale, you have to get a ride from Jolly. He’s been driving a cab for over 50 years here, and was full of stories. He drove us past the crossroads where Robert Johnson is supposed to have sold his soul to the devil to learn to play the guitar, and then on to our dinner spot, Yazoo Pass. It was pretty tasty, and then we waited on the pleasantly deserted street for Jolly to finish another run and then take us back to our motel, all the while decrying how another taxi from Ita Bene had stolen his fare he was supposed to take to Memphis. Quite an end to the night.
