Day 1, April 21: Houston to Shepherd

April 21, 2019January 16, 2024 By 2c4m

Joe, being the procrastinator extraordinaire, didn’t start packing until after church. Amazingly, got it done in time, but then on the way to pick up John he discovered he’d forgotten his phone…doh! We were therefore a few minutes late to Discovery Green, but happy to see friends and family there to send us off. Joe’s wife, Anne, and his daughter, Kate, made a banner for them to bike through to officially kick off the 1,200-mile journey.

Kate hugging Daddy…he will owe her 100 hugs when he gets back.

First section was along one of our training routes. The pollos asados place had the grill rocking, but it was way to early for that. Nice tailwind pushing us along. When our route took us onto US-59 at New Caney, we stopped to eat at the Slowest Subway in the Universe©. Biking along the access road (feeder to Houstonians) and then the shoulder is not the quietest route, but we had no issues. In Cleveland we stopped to let Joe Facetime with Kate and Anne (he promised Kate he would call every night at bedtime so they could do their nightly ritual of saying the Lord’s Prayer) then on to Shepherd. As tempted as they were to take up Joe’s brother David’s offer of staying at his lakehouse on Lake Livingston, it was just too dark – and they were too tuckered – to push on. There is one motel in Shepherd, so that was it for us.

61 miles.
