Sheila made a breakfast casserole for us to start our day, which was just the fuel we needed. We took several pictures with Richard and her in front of the house before we got on our way. Construction along our original route forced a slight detour, but it had the added benefit of letting us see them one more time as they passed us along the road to Hamburg on their way to join Loni and Brad for church. At Hamburg we turned back to the east, and had a it of a slow trudge most of the afternoon. I did get to surprise John when we took a break and took out the rest of the fig cake from the previous night: Sheila had wrapped it in aluminum foil and put it in a ziplock baggie to make sure it would survive in my backpack, which it did admirably. It was a very welcome treat that afternoon. No open stores until we made it to Lake Village, where we found respite in a McDonald’s that will not be winning any customer-service awards any time soon. We headed back out into the headwinds as we biked around the oxbow lake (where Hernando de Soto is rumored to be buried); the winds seemed to turn with us until we finally got onto the bridge over the Mississippi, when they finally relented and became tailwinds again. Due to the vagaries of course changes over the years, it was still another couple hundred yards before we crossed into the State of Mississippi, and then a few more miles into Greenville and our stop for the night. After checking into our hotel (formerly the home of Levee Control Board), we took advantage of the vouchers they gave us at check in for the restaurant at the adjacent casino. After viewing the games on offer, gave away the casino voucher to one of the locals and went back to crash.
